Though the ending is bittersweet, the journey is so much fun, with a candidness about the emotional component essential to sex work. The fun and intimacy of her interactions with clientele are thoughtfully contrasted with the coldness, sexless nature of her marriage. She begins working as a high-end escort, hosting her clients in a renovated loft she’s supposed to be selling. When Abby’s son accidentally hits her in the head with a baseball, the resulting concussion leads her to reassess her life. “Concussion” presents an image of upper middle class lesbian life that feels casual and real. This one is a little sad, but its perspective is fascinating. If you’ve been avoiding it because you see it as a standard Oscar-winning weepie, reconsider. Though the film is somber, it’s ending has such profound beauty and hope. It’s three stars (Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes) are equally talented at portraying a Southern Black gay man from childhood to adulthood. There’s a lot of hype around Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature, but it’s all warranted.

Hiroshima was chosen because it had not been targeted during the US Air Force's conventional bombing raids on Japan, and was therefore regarded as being a suitable place to test the effects of an atomic bomb. Thousands of people were made homeless and fled the devastated city. And the intense heat of the explosion then created many fires, which consumed Hiroshima and lasted for three days, trapping and killing many of the survivors of the initial blast. The blast destroyed more than ten square kilometres (six square miles) of the city. As well as residents of Hiroshima, the victims included Koreans who had been forced to come to Japan as labourers, and American prisoners-of-war who were imprisoned in Hiroshima. The final death toll was calculated at 135,000. Many more died of the long-term effects of radiation sickness. The heat from the bomb was so intense that some people simply vanished in the explosion. Between 60,000 and 80,000 people were killed instantly. The bomb was dropped by parachute and exploded 580m (1,900ft) above the ground. On the morning of 6 August 1945 an American B-29 bomber, the 'Enola Gay', dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. So much of our behaviour is conditioned by our formative experiences and later circumstances that it's hard to separate what we started out feeling and what developed along the way. Can one's sexuality change in such a short time? Is this normal? Ever since spending time with these women I haven't had as strong feelings for men and for the first time find myself fantasising about these women. I wonder if this might have contributed to my belief that I was gay. I went to a single-sex school and have never really had any female friends. The dilemma I have known I was gay since I was a boy, but recently I have started having sexual feelings for women that I've spent a lot of time with at university. ![]() ![]() All I know is that one moment we were talking and the next minute, well. The minutiae of exactly how things developed from us being together in that room to us having slightly unsuccessful sex in a bathroom in a different corridor have since escaped me. ![]() He was clearly intoxicated, but it was a party after all and who was I, quite drunk myself, to judge. It was late (or early, depending on your outlook on the world) when I was joined by the boy who was living in the room next to mine, way back on the other side of the building. I can remember, although I'd had some drinks, sitting alone in my friend’s room on a single bed, the mattress overly springy and with a coarse plastic coating, attempting to stream a song over our dorm’s spotty Internet connection. The whole thing went down near the end of my freshman year at a party, at which people from the whole dorm floor were drunk and celebrating, carelessly streaming in and out of each other’s rooms, following the various different pop songs until one room took their fancy. I was at college, living in dorms, and the experience-aside from the usual horrifying awkwardness and somewhat spontaneity of the occasion-was completely and utterly unremarkable aside from one thing: the guy I slept with identified as straight. I was 19 when I first had full-on sex with another man. For example, some are nonbinary or genderfluid and feel that neither cisgender nor transgender accurately conveys their experience. Metagender has been defined as “A not insignificant quantity of people consider themselves neither cis nor trans. The combination of the black and white stripes and the rainbow represent the allies’ support of the LGBTQ+ community. And I made a couple flags actually, but this one I submitted to a blog on Tumblr about genderfluidity and gender fluid people. “I wouldn’t call myself an artist, but I’ve dabbled with drawing and bits of Photoshop, so I decided to create it myself. I found genderfluid to be fitting but was disappointed with the lack of symbolic representation,” Poole said. At the time I knew genderqueer fit me, but it still felt too broad. ![]() “I had been trying to find an identity that fit me. In an interview with Majestic Mess Designs, Poole said they created the flag because genderfluidity lacked a symbol and the term “genderqueer” didn’t exactly fit. Purple: Represents both masculinity and feminity ![]() The flag was created by JJ Poole in 2012 according to OutRight Action International. How often someone’s identity shifts depends on the individual. People who are genderfluid don’t identify with one gender, but rather their gender identity shifts between male, female, or somewhere else on the spectrum. |
